Group activities

The Medical Imaging and Instrumentation Group’s research is focused on the development and application of technologies in the field of medical and molecular imaging.

Areas of active research include the development of new and improved photon detectors, image processing and acquisition electronics. The technologies under study include multimodal positron emission tomography (PET, PET/CT and PET/MRI), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), x-ray computed tomography (CT), and optical imaging.

The research group is involved in several national and international projects, ranging from the development of commercial-grade tomographic systems to leading-edge SiPM-based photon sensing detectors for specific biological or medical applications. The work carried out within these projects involves novel software/hardware development, system simulation and design, data acquisition and correction strategies, three-dimensional high-performance image reconstruction, visualization, analysis, and quantification of imaging data.
